Remembering More Than Ever
A unique Maccabiah initiative honoring 18 fallen heroes
- 02 August, 2026
One of the most meaningful and moving initiatives of Maccabiah 2026 was a unique remembrance project honoring the memory of 18 men and women who lost their lives during the Swords of Iron War, most of them graduates of the Maccabi Tzair youth movement.
From the very begging, our vision was clear: not only to remember the moment they fell, but to celebrate the lives they lived. Through 18 unique activities, each inspired by an individual's passions, hobbies, music, sport and personality, we chose to honor them through the things that made them who they were.
The project connected people from around the world with deeply personal Israeli stories, demonstrating that remembrance can live not only through ceremonies, but also through shared experiences. Because perhaps the most meaningful way to remember someone is to carry forward the things they loved most.
Throughout the Games, thousands of athletes, coaches and guests took part in these activities, discovering not only the names of those we lost, but also the dreams they pursued, the values they lived by and the light they left behind.
In memory of Captain Shir Eilat and her love of bringing people together around the family table, we explored the vibrant markets of Tel Aviv on special food tours.
The football match between Team Israel and Team France was dedicated to Dan Elkayam, who proudly represented France at the previous Maccabiah Games, symbolizing his deep connection to both countries and his love of the game.
In memory of Adi Leon, we danced to the music he created, while Maccabiah Junior participants met Adi's parents and heard his extraordinary and inspiring story firsthand.
In memory of Noam Bitan, we filmed funny videos - just as he loved to do, bringing smiles to everyone around him.
In memory of Captain Eden Nimri, seventeen swimmers, joined by her family and friends, took part in a special open-water exhibition swim.
In memory of Adir Ishto Bogale we held a Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremony at the Western Wall - a place especially close to his heart and the values he lived by.
In memory of Noa Zander, we joined AKIM members for a basketball training session led by Maccabiah Ambassador and Paralympic athlete Moran Samuel - a heartwarming gathering of joy, inclusion and friendship that reflected the values she embodied.
In memory of Raz Mizrachi, we sang together at an Israeli karaoke evening filled with music and smiles, and took part in a 5km run alongside the Border Police unit where Raz served.
In memory of Shay Germay, we surprised Maccabiah athletes celebrating their birthdays together with cakes, greetings, and small moments of joy - just as she always found ways to make others feel special and loved.
In memory of Kim Damti, we shared her beloved family falafel, enjoying a taste of the warm home she came from.
The spirit of volunteering and giving back, inspired by Sigal Levy's life and legacy, became part of the Maccabiah Junior educational activities through the Good People initiative.
In memory of Lior Aton, we took part in a dog-training workshop, honoring her lifelong dream of studying and deepening her knowledge in the field.
In memory of Daniel Alush, children of all ages came together for a special run, reminding us that dreams and perseverance know no age.
In memory of Guy Simhi, we hosted an energetic footvolley tournament celebrating the joy, friendship and positive spirit that defined his life.
In memory of Yotam Ben Bassat, we held an inspiring gathering focused on sport, excellence and tennis - the game that accompanied him throughout his life.
In memory of Guy Karmiel, we gathered around a traditional Israeli Pakal Kafe (coffee kit), sharing meaningful conversations and simple moments of togetherness.
In memory of Niv Raviv, we welcomed the morning with a yoga session connecting body and soul – a connection that meant so much to her.
In memory of Harel Ittah, we greeted the sunrise with a run across the Wingate sands, honoring his love of welcoming each new day through movement.
As part of the project, a personal commemorative pin was designed for each of the 18 honorees –not simply as a symbol, but as a wearable story inspired by each person's life.
As the Games came to a close, thousands of athletes returned home with Maccabiah medals, unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships, but also with a small commemorative pin - and the story of one remarkable individual whose legacy will never be forgotten.
