A Historic Moment
David Korenfeld appointed Vice Chairman of the World Zionist Organization
- 31 December, 2025
A milestone moment for MWU and Zionist leadership worldwide: David Korenfeld has been appointed Vice Chairman of the World Zionist Organization (WZO).
David’s journey with Maccabi began more than six decades ago, as a young member of Maccabi Tzair Uruguay. At just 20 years old, driven by his deep commitment to Maccabi and the Zionist vision, he made a life-changing decision to immigrate to Israel - marking the beginning of a lifelong path of leadership, creativity, and devotion to the movement.
In 2003, David founded the MWU Education Department, laying the foundation for a new era of educational excellence within Maccabi World Union. Under his leadership, the department flourished, expanding its global reach and profoundly enriching the lives of Maccabi members around the world.
Widely regarded as one of Maccabi’s most creative and culturally driven leaders, David introduced innovative approaches to Jewish-Zionist education and Israeli culture through impactful programs that inspired generations to embrace their Jewish identity, heritage, and sense of belonging.
Over the years, David has held numerous leadership roles within MWU - including his long-standing service as Vice Chairman - demonstrating unwavering commitment to the movement’s growth, success, relevance, and influence.
He has also represented the movement in Israel’s national institutions, the World Zionist Organization, and the Jewish Agency, playing a vital role in advancing our mission and core values and strengthening Jewish communities worldwide.
David's new appointment carries profound historical significance. It is the first of its kind since Max Nordau – the spiritual founder of the Maccabi Movement – who, in his landmark speech at the Second Zionist Congress in 1898, called on the Jewish people to strengthen both body and spirit through sport. His vision sparked the creation of Jewish sports clubs across Europe and beyond - including the first Maccabi clubs.
Amir Peled, Chairman of Maccabi World Union, congratulated David, saying: "This appointment reflects deep appreciation for David’s decades of leadership and commitment to Zionist and communal life. For Maccabi World Union, it is a meaningful achievement that strengthens our standing in the Zionist and international arenas and opens new opportunities for cooperation, leadership development, and impact in Israel and worldwide.”
Today, as David steps into this historic role, we celebrate a powerful moment for the Maccabi Movement, the Zionist vision, and Jewish leadership worldwide. Congratulations, David - and thank you for continuing to lead our shared journey forward!
