Maccabi South Africa is one of the six confederations that make up the Maccabi World Union, and is divided into two main regions - Maccabi Johannesburg and Western Province Maccabi, Cape Town. A relatively large Jewish community resides in South Africa, and, like in other confederations, Maccabi plays an integral role in bridging between members of the community and promoting healthy living alongside a strengthened Jewish identity.
Maccabi South Africa has been participating in the Maccabiah for well over 30 years. The 14th Maccabiah (1993) marked the South African delegation’s first appearance at the event after it suffered a 20-year-long boycott by global sporting organizations. This year, however, the team is back and ready to take on a broad variety of sporting fields, including its most popular, rugby and soccer.
